Privacy policy

What we collect when you use The Engine Room, why, and your rights. Last updated 19 October 2026.

Who we are

The Engine Room (theengineroomhq.com) is an independent software review site. For anything about your data, email [email protected].

The short version

  • We don't set any cookies of our own and we don't run advertising trackers.
  • We don't ask for an account, and we don't sell or share personal data.
  • When you click through to a tool we review, that company's own privacy policy applies from then on.

What we collect

  • Hosting and security data. Our site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any website, it receives technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested, which Cloudflare processes to deliver the page and protect the site from abuse. We use this only in aggregate and don't use it to identify you.
  • Site search. Search runs inside your browser. What you type isn't sent to us.
  • Links to other companies. Some links are affiliate links. When you click one, the link tells the company that the visit came from The Engine Room and which page and button it came from, so they can credit us if you buy. We don't add anything that identifies you. Once you're on their site, they may set their own cookies under their own privacy policy.
  • Emails you send us. If you email us, we keep the message and your email address so we can reply, and delete them when they're no longer needed.

We don't currently use analytics. If we add them, we'll use a privacy-friendly, cookieless tool and update this page first.

Why we're allowed to use it

Under UK and EU data protection law (UK GDPR / GDPR), we rely on legitimate interests to run, secure and improve the site, and to reply when you contact us.

Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, or object to how we use it, by emailing [email protected]. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
